Inspections and booking
- Deck and sheathing — Ordinary city-inspection route: pre-roofing inspection checks existing supporting roof structure and number of roof layers; roof-sheathing nailing inspection is required if applicable. Qualified one-/two-family self-certification route: active C-39 contractor personally inspects and certifies structural support and sheathing nailing. Confirm the selected permit route and hold points before covering.
- In-progress — Ordinary route lists pre-roofing and applicable sheathing-nailing inspections before final; no additional separate underlayment/flashing visit is specified. Under qualifying self-certification, contractor inspects code compliance and documents progress throughout the project, including underlayment, flashings and roofing certification.
- Final closeout — Ordinary route requires final after completed work, including smoke/CO alarm verification. Qualifying self-certified route requires delivery of the completed Self-Certification Inspection Form plus Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm Installation Certification to the City for final closeout, and a signed certification copy to the homeowner. Missing certification can require a new permit.
- Scheduling — Confirm whether the project will use City of Sonoma inspections or qualifying contractor self-certification before starting. For ordinary inspections, the contractor arranges access for pre-roofing, applicable sheathing nailing and final. Confirm booking deadlines and windows with the City of Sonoma; County scheduling is a different service.
Questions for this project
Can any Sonoma roofer self-certify?
City of Sonoma self-certification is limited to eligible one- or two-family projects with an active C-39 roofing contractor. The contractor keeps a written qualification declaration on file for one year and personally inspects and documents progress on a project approved for that route.
