Permit

Roof replacement permits in Danville

We pull it and schedule the inspections. It’s billed at the city’s actual cost, separate from the roof.

Permit authority
Town of Danville Building Division for parcels inside town limits; Contra Costa County for addresses outside town limits.
Permit planning
ARS allows approximately one week for permits unless the department confirms a shorter route; issuance is not guaranteed.
Past ARS permit cost
Our August 2024 Danville reroof invoice listed $468.53 as the contractor-billed permit charge. That historical invoice amount is a budgeting example; it is not a municipal payment receipt or today’s quote for your roof.
Permit fee planning
Danville’s FY2026/27 standard residential reroof fee is $331 before applicable state, planning and documentation charges. Ask for the total assessment for your roof; the base alone is not the permit payment.

Inspections

Inspections and booking

  1. Deck and sheathing — Danville’s standard tear-off procedure allows a signed letter on the contractor’s letterhead in place of the tear-off visit. Describe the damage replaced, or state that none was found. Confirm any roof-deck, new-sheathing or nailing inspection before covering; the letter does not waive those assigned checks.
  2. In-progress — Follow Danville’s permit-assigned inspections. A separate routine in-progress visit is not part of the standard reroof sequence, but field conditions can call for additional checks.
  3. Final closeout — Building final is required. When using Danville’s tear-off letter procedure, keep the signed letter available for inspection staff; it is required for final approval.
  4. Scheduling — Use CSS or 925-314-3333 before 3 p.m. for the next business day; requests can be made up to five days ahead. Two-hour assigned windows are posted after 5 p.m. for the following day. Call 925-314-3330 for changes/cancellation.

Local roofing decisions

Roof work and solar hardware met in the same scope

A June 2026 Danville record combines deck repairs with removal and resetting of 14 solar panels on new rails. The roofing work included repairs to skip sheathing and dry rot, new flashing, underlayment and ridge caps. Seamless gutters, stainless steel gutter guards, a downspout and exterior painting were additional recorded items. Listing those trades separately makes it possible to coordinate the roof inspection with solar handling and to see what the final contract actually covers.

Customer discussion

A Danville reroof had separate ventilation decisions for its single-story and two-story sections. The homeowner wanted a working fan kept on one section and a cleaner layout around the solar panels on the other. During solar reinstallation, new brackets also required compatible rails. Mark equipment to keep, review each roof space and confirm mounting compatibility before assuming everything can be reused.

Straight answers

Questions for this project

Will a heavier replacement roof need engineering?

When the new material is heavier than the old roof, the Building Official may request a framing plan and, in some cases, an engineer's stamped letter and drawing, including lateral-load review.

Does a residential reroof need the Town's waste tracking plan?

Danville explicitly exempts residential reroofs from its C&D waste-tracking ordinance; other work added to the job can change the applicable project category.
